How to Fix Wordpress Error Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete

This error can happen in one of two places, on the user side, or on the admin side.

When it happens on the admin side (wp-admin), you will find that you are unable to login.

Step 1: Connect to your blog using ftp and navigate to your wp-content/plugins/ directory and download all of your plugins to a folder on your desktop.
Step 3: Still in your FTP program, delete all plugin folders and php files in the plugins directory. You do not want anything at all left in this directory.
Step 4: Try logging into your blog. It should let you log in with no problems. Visit the plugins section of your blog. This should load with a lot of errors telling you that each plugin has been deactivated due to an error. This is ok.
Step 5: Using your ftp program you should upload all your plugins. Once uploaded you should activate each plugin one by one within wordpress and then visit the wp-admin/ login address to make sure that it will pass you through to your blog once logged in.
Step 6: When you activate a plugin and start getting this error again, you will know which one is to blame. Simply delete that plugin via ftp and start looking for an alternative plugin to use.

If these steps do not fix your problem, you should backup all your wordpress files and then delete them. You should them upload clean wordpress files for the latest version and try logging in with no themes or plugins uploaded. You can upload these later once you can login.

If you continue getting error, clear your browser cache, test logging in with other browsers.

If all else fails, contact your webhost or open a thread on the wordpress support forum.

Hi everyone, i have installed WP 2.9.1 and still new without any plugin but searched and found the wp-admin/options-permalink.php because it exists in my admin section, what shall i do so that i stop facing the same problem of not login in? Please help.

Note: That i was able to login to the admin by using a better browser but am of the opinion to support those who dont have higher version of browsers here in africa.

Hello, if you are unable to login from your pc, but can login from another pc using the same browser, it would seem that the problem is with your local pc. Normally this error is specific to firefox, but is due to the config of the blog and would generally give an error whatever browser you were using. When you can access your blog using another pc and the same browser, it is likely your local firefox or network / connection settings.
You should logon via ftp and delete all plugins and all themes except your default and classic theme, then try to access your wp-admin area again. Sometimes themes can cause issues on the admin area. Alternatively, instead of visiting YourDomain.com/wp-admin/ you could try visiting the login file directly. Sometimes this can work. You would visit YourDomain.com/wp-login.php

Please reply with the details of your website, I would be happy to take a look for you. Does the problem happen when you enter you login details, or does it happen before you can enter your login details?

      Many thanks

One of my friends cannot access my site and he is getting the same thing. Do you think you can help me investigate? I have the URL in the Website box. Thanks in advance.

I checked your site and it is loading correctly. If I can access it and you can access it without an error, it is likely to be a local problem with your freinds installation of fiefox. Can they access using another browser such as firefox?

What about if you are experiencing this problem from as a user? I have not been able to access Wordpress blogs (or anything from Wordpress.com, or Typepad, for that matter) for several months. I use the most recent version of Safari. I found one fix which involved saving a code to my computer’s root directory and then making it a proxy server for Wordpress, but a) I am not quite that tech-savvy, and b)there must be some simpler reason why I am not able to access Wordpress. Any further ideas would be SO welcome! I feel like I am missing out on valuable content in the blogosphere!

Are all wordpress based websites effected? Or just websites hosted at wordpress.com? It may be a local issue and not one directly associated with wordpress or the server. I would assume that if it were a problem with wordpress or the server, it would have been fixed pretty quick due to the number of people who would have been effected. If you can provide some examples of websites that display this problem when you try to connect to them, I would be happy to investigate it for you.

Thank you SO much for your reply! I have inquired with other users who live in Morocco (where I live) and they don’t experience the same problem, so I am guessing it is not a problem with my Internet provider blocking certain sites, for example, but rather some sort of setting on my own computer? But some of the sites I cannot access include: marrakechxanthe.wordpress.com, and almiraatblog.wordpress.com. I get a blank white screen after a minute or so, but no content every arrives. YET, I can access http://cabalamuse.wordpress.com/. My Internet connection speed is 54.0 Mbps, cookies are enabled, I use WIndows Visa Home PRemium, with Service Pack 2. I just am not sure what’s going on – but I appreciate you taking the time to check it out for me:)

Thank you for your kind words. The solution would ultimately depend on the problem at hand. This loop is caused by something sending the user back to the place the loop starts. It could be two or more plugins or your theme causing the loop. Have you deactivated all your plugins by logging in via ftp to see if that fixes it? If not, try doing the same with the theme you are using. This will force your site to use the default theme.

I’m unable to resolve this in my local. I can Worpress in Safari but getting this error in Firefox. Any suggestion?

    • admin says:

Hello, If you are getting this error with wordpress, you should download your plugins and themes via ftp. Then delete all plugins and all themes except your Classic and Default themes. This will stop all plugins and themes from working and you should now be able to access your wordpress blog and login.
Once logged in, visit your plugins section where you will see it confirms that your plugins have been deactivated. Now you can upload and activate your plugins one by one, testing your site as you go.
You will likely find that you get the same error when you activate a plugin or theme. This will be the one at fault.

      Hope this helps.

Thank you so much! It turned out to be a permalink redirect plugin that was causing the problem on our end.

Hello, the problem is that the plugin will run something simple like sending the user to tab 1 once logged in, but wordpress change the system so tab 1 is the login screen, or doesnt exist. This then creates an eternal loop. Normally this only efffects the login/admin section, however there are some category plugins that cause the same problem with a single category.

We are very happy that it helped you. Whenever we come across a problem that takes a long time to diagnose, but is simple to fix when you know how, we will post it on our site to help you.

This is an excellent post, thanks a lot for sharing. We were having issues with Pinoy Sports> which was upgraded to 2.7.1 from 2.0. After going through each plugin, we were able to conclude that Category Visibility – RH Rev is the plugin causing the redirect loop. Firefox is really a smarter browser. That loop can bring a server down.

    • admin says:

Firefox is a great browser, but wordpress seems to have been tested with internet explorer. Over 50% of our users are using firefox with only around 30% still using internet explorer.
Remember to always test your site in as many browsers as you can so that you can ensure maximum compatibility. If a user can’t access your site, they can’t contact you to tell you.

Great to hear. This was a major problem that was easy to solve. Unfortunately its very hard to troubleshoot. As soon as we saw it happen we posted it here so that everyone else could easily fix it. We’re very happy that this info has been useful.

Thank you so much for this article!!

I just had this problem happen to me. This was so helpful. I found the problem (it was a plugin “redirection” that caused the site to collapse).

    Take good care….

    Andy
